Foreign guests who want to drive on their Turkey holiday have a few basic questions. In fact, driving in Turkey is quite easy, especially for guests from Germany and other EU countries. Here’s what you need to know.

Licence validity

EU licences, especially German ones, are valid for touristic rental in Turkey and need no translation. An international driving permit is not required but can be useful to carry. Long-term residence may require different rules.

Speed limits

Limits are usually: 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on rural roads, 110 km/h on expressways and 120 km/h on motorways. Follow the signs; radar checks are common and fines go to the registered holder/renter.

Traffic rules and safety

Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants, handheld phone use while driving is banned, and drink-driving is heavily penalised. Mind your headlights, indicators and lane discipline.

Care on coastal roads

On the coastal roads around Alanya, scooters, motorbikes and pedestrians are plentiful; be careful especially on summer evenings. On mountain and canyon roads, watch the bends and gradients. Choose your car and drive safely — on all cars, pay on pickup.
